I dream of painting and then paint my dream – Van Gogh

Mustaches. November. This is one common association that people make. With lack of mustache growing skills (sorry Tom Selleck), I have resorted to the other gifts that this month has brought me. Art, music, and dance.

It all started on November 5th with MuseumNacht. Also known as museum night for those who speak English, or just “n8″ for some Amsterdammers, it’s an event held from 7:00 pm to 2:00 am when fourty five museums open up to the public. I was lucky enough to have my fellow Bellarmine student, Jen, in town. We traveled on bike from the Tattoo Museum to the Artis Aquarium, Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Bols, and FOAM photography museum. All the museums have special events just for this one night. It was amazing not only to see so many exhibits in such a short period of time, but also so late at night. Crowds of people filled the streets to get into some of them, but we luckily never had to wait too long.

This is what a Van Gogh painting would look like if it was in real life.

Taking a break from all that biking...

Since one night of museums wasn’t enough culture (sarcasm) , just a week later I had a chance to see the Rhymsayers Tour with Atmosphere and Brother Ali. Last Friday, again because of the Independent Film Festival in town, I saw another musical act, Phife Dawg (from A Tribe Called Quest). Both shows were held in this really cool venue called Melkweg…an old dairy factory turned concert/dance hall.

Wrapping up this months excursions was… the Dutch National Ballet. Students get a special deal on tickets, so for only 10 euros I got to see Swan Lake. Of course it just seemed natural after having recently watched Black Swan (2011) to have a set of strange expectations. Setting those thoughts aside, I found myself engrossed in the music and beautiful professional dancers. Leaving the show, I already knew I was going to buy tickets for their next show, The Nutcracker. I think the little girl inside of me still wants to be a ballerina.

Now off to preparing for finals and attempting to create a Thanksgiving meal like i’m missing back home!
